DEETSIE'S CARDINALFISH
Apogon deetsie Randall, 1998
Named for University of Hawai`i zoologist E.H. "Deetsie" Chave, who wrote her thesis on Hawaiian cardinalfishes, this recently described fish is seen only on the darkest nights in the farthest recesses of caves. When illuminated it immediately seeks shelter. Translucent reddish in color, it has a forked tail fin with two beautifully rounded lobes. To about 3 in. Known so far only from Hawai`i and the Tuamoto Islands of French Polynesia. Photo: Waimea Bay, 30 ft. (night). This is probably the only existing photo of the fish alive.
