SAILFIN TANG juvenile
Zebrasoma veliferum
This little Sailfin Tang looks like he's been stretched vertically with Photoshop! But I swear the photo is real. Adults are common on Hawaiian reefs, but I've encountered the striking juveniles with their permanently raised "sails" only in sheltered Kane`ohe Bay on O`ahu. Could it be that on O`ahu adults all start life in Kane`ohe Bay or other very sheltered locations, then migrate to other parts of the island? Or are the juveniles widespread but extremely cryptic? The latter is more likely. After all, some butterflyfish species are almost never seen as juveniles either.
