| GORGONIAN
GOBY Bryaninops amplus Larson, 1985 (SEAWHIP GOBY) Through most of its Indo-Pacific range this small goby commonly lives on gorgonian sea whips. In Hawai`i, however, where these soft corals do not occur, it is usually seen on Red Wire Coral (Stichopathes c.f. echinulata) and sometimes long, thin manmade objects like permanent mooring lines. Similar to the slightly smaller and more common Wire Coral Goby, B. yongei, the transparent upper half of the body contains 6-7 faint brown to orange bars that connect to the similarly colored lower half of the body. Often there are small spots of the same color along the back between the bars. To about 2 inches. Indo-Pacific. Photos: (above) Kaohe Bay, Hawai`i. 40 ft. (below)Lehua Islet, Kauai. 40 ft. |
