Maritigrella eschara Newman & Cannon, 2000

The top specimen (about 1/2 inch long) was collected on Oahu by Ron Holcom and later identified by Leslie Newman.

The photos of a 2-inch specimen
(at bottom) were taken by Bill Stohler at the Haleiwa Trench, Oahu, at 85 ft. in July, 2010.

This rare animal, surely one of Hawaii's most beautiful flatworms, also occurs in Australia, Timor, and undoubtedly elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific. The genus name Maritigrella, meaning "tiger of the sea", reflects the pattern of transverse stripes present on most species.
