Checklist
of the Fishes of the Hawaiian Archipelago
Bishop Museum Bulletin in Zoology 6
by Bruce C. Mundy
This monumental and scholarly work contains an annotated list of
every known fish species in Hawai`i, from the shallows to way beyond
diving depths. The entry for each species contains:
+ Scientific and common names used in Hawai`i.
+ All important taxonomic references to the species,
esp. in Hawai`i.
+ The range within the Hawaiian Islands, plus the depth
ranges and general habitat.
+ The geographic range outside Hawaii.
The author
also provides 85 pages of introductory text discussing topics such
as "How many fish species are there in the Hawaiian Islands."
"What were the origins of Hawai`i's fish fauna?" "What
events in deep geologic time set the stage for the origins of the
Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Archipelago, and the evolution of their
fish fauna."
A word of warning: The book contains no information on species
identification or biology. There are no pictures. However, it presents
a great deal of useful information for anyone interested in Hawaiian
fishes.
