GREEN JACK
Caranx caballus Günther, 1868
A slender, silvery jack that grows to about 2 ft. in length, travels in small groups, and has a dark spot at eye level on the edge of the gill cover. The species' normal range is the west coast of .the Americas from California south to Chile, but in 1998 these fish began turning up in Hawaii in such large numbers that they were believed to have established a breeding population here. However, their numbers dwindled and few were reported in subsequent years. Now, as of summer 2025, they are again being seen along the Kona Coast, and perhaps elsewhere in the state. Only time will tell whether they have succeeded in forming a stable population. Photo from Kona, Hawai'i, courtesy of Doug Perrine.
