RAINBOW CHUB
Sectator ocyurus (Jordan & Gilbert, 1881)
These attractive chubs are dull yellow-green with two bright blue stripes running the body's length. The underside is white. Unlike others of their kind, they are plankton-eaters. They sometimes congregate around floating logs or other objects far from land. Rare in Hawai`i, they apparently drift in as waifs from the Eastern Pacific or (less likely) the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, the only two areas where they are known to reproduce. Waifs also turn up on occasion in Guam and the Mariana Islands. The species name means "sharp" or "swift." To about 15 in. Photo: Nuku Hiva, Marquesas.
